What Makes a 1964 Nickel Valuable?
For a 1964 nickel to have significant value (over $100), it generally needs one of the following:
- Full Steps (FS): The steps on the back of the coin (Monticello) must be perfectly struck and clearly separated. Your coin's steps are worn smooth from use.
- Special Mint Sets (SMS): A tiny number of prototype coins were made with a satin-like finish. These are almost never found in circulation.
- Major Errors: Dramatic errors like being struck on a penny planchet or being significantly off-center.
